Iran says it will shut down most of its nuclear facilities

Iran says the country will shut its nuclear plants and its nuclear weapons program will cease, after the United States and Russia reached a deal to freeze the country’s uranium enrichment.

The announcement from the Iranian presidency says the nuclear facilities will be shut down “in the near future.”

Iran’s nuclear program has been plagued by suspicions since the Islamic Republic seized power in 1979.

The United States has accused Iran of seeking to develop a nuclear weapon and has pressed the world powers to do more to isolate the Islamic republic.

The nuclear deal struck between the world’s powers and Iran on July 14, 2018, came after a month of negotiations.
